While out on my walk this morning with my dog Cassie, a simple but profound thought struck me.
I was watching Cassie run gleefully through the woods (she loves our early morning walks) when the thought came to me:
This is my time.
Just four words, but they resonated like the peal of a bell.
This is my time.
What was God saying to me? What did my spirit want me to hear as I walked alone through this patch of Pennsylvania woods on a mid-February morning?
I didn’t know, so I just allowed the words to work through me as I walked.
It was a gorgeous winter morning. Cloudless blue sky. Frost on the ground. The air cold but with hint of a warmup to come later in the day.
Birdsong was rising along with the sun. The air was windless and quiet as a church. Overhead I heard the caws of crows and geese honking.
We approached the creek. Cassie stopped at the bank to look curiously at a handful of mallard ducks floating in the water.
Like the dawning of the sun over the horizon, I became suddenly conscious of the life within me. The life within Cassie. The life within those ducks and the crows and the geese.
The life that coursed through the water, the trees, the sky.
It was all one spirit, one life force, and Cassie and I were participating in it on this 18th day of February in the year 2017.
I had been through a lot of tough times in my life. Wonderful times too. But I was here now, alive, in this moment.
If there was anything I wanted to do, if there was anything I wanted to say or be, now was the time to do it.
I felt the need to reach out to people. To write this blog post. To say to you that this is your time too.
You may be healthy or sick. Rich or poor. At the beginning of your life or at the end of your life.
But you’re alive now, at this moment, and this moment is precious.
If there’s anything you want to do, or be, or say, now is the time to do it.
We’re all alive together at this moment. We are all different, yet all the same.
If there’s anything we want to do together, this is the time. This is the time to make a difference.
Or perhaps we don’t want to do anything at this moment. Perhaps at this particular moment we can just set aside all of the doing and just be.
Stop. Look around. Breathe in. Feel the air fill your lungs. Feel the life force.
This is my time.
This is your time.
This is our time.
Peace,
Jim
